Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registry check Required

This placement requires BOTH a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) AND a Child Abuse Registry Check.

-To complete your Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC):

VSC Paperwork will need to be filled out during your placement meeting or during the RCMP drop in sessions where you will be able to come by the Service Learning office and fill out the required VSC paperwork. If you are unable to attend one of the RCMP Sessions, you will be responsible to go to the RCMP station located at 4 Fairview Street Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 A.M. and 4:30 P.M. and fill out the VSC paperwork there. You will need two pieces of valid ID to complete paperwork. Health card and student ID count.

RCMP Sessions are located in the Coady Building Room 374 and will be held:

Tuesday, September 16th @ 11:00 A.M. – 1:00 PM.

Location: 30 Appleseed Drive
Directions:
AEC is about a 15 minute walk from campus. Highland Drive begins at the corner of West St. and Highland, at the traffic light. Walk along Highland Drive to the end. You will see two large brick schools. AEC is the building on the left. Please sign in at the office each time you attend your placement.

Community Partner:
Antigonish Education Centre (AEC) is a large grade Primary-4 school that serves the Antigonish town and various parts of Antigonish County. There are approximately 500 students in the school, divided among 4 or 5 classes for each grade level. The school offers both French immersion and English programming.

Student’s Role:
StFX students supervise, interact with, and observe students in an unstructured setting supporting them with needs such as band aids, zippering coats etc. in addition to helping to resolve conflicts and facilitate games.

Schedule:

15 students per term, In-Person placement
First Term - September 2023 - December 2023 (20 hours)
Second Term - January 2024- April 2024 (20 hours)
3 students per day, 1 hour twice a week – Monday-Friday Between 11:00am-1:30pm

Antigonish Education Centre Orientation:

First Day of Placement

If you have not done a Service Learning placement, you are required to attend one orientation.

We will be hosting orientations on:

Thursday September 21st from 10-15am-12:15pm- -Coady- 242
Thursday, September 21st- from 5:30-7:30 pm Coady-242
Friday, September 22^nd from 2:15-4:15pm- Coady-242

The RCMP will be in Coady 374 on:

Tuesday, September 12^th from 1:00-3:00pm
Tuesday September 19th from 1:00pm-3:00pm.
Please do not go to the RCMP station.

Expectations of Service Learning Students:

Students must arrive on time.
Students must dress appropriately. (No inappropriate amount of skin or inappropriate slogans) Appropriate footwear is also required.
“No scent is good sense”.
Electronic devices are not permitted for personal use while working at your placement.
If you are sick and contagious, STAY HOME.
